Ac·count’a·bili’·ty – the quality or state of being accountable; especially an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions.

Accountability is something that we talk about in business continuously. Having a culture of accountability, showing person accountability, being accountable to our clients, accountability is truly the buzz word of our time. How does one become accountable let alone create a culture of accountability?

Look in the mirror. You are at the front lines in creating a culture of accountability, your team looks to you as the trend setter. Ask yourself, does your team trust you to follow through on you commitments? Have you trained yourself what it means to follow through? Make a commitment each day and follow it to completion, this will set the tone for your team.

Coach behaviours that are not desired. When you see something happen that isn’t part of your definition of accountability, coach the behaviour as soon as possible. In general, people want to do well in business and they want to do the right thing. Give your team feedback so they are able to meet your standards. Take the guessing game out of it.

Acknowledge behaviour you want to see more of. When people do what you expect, let them know! Give praise when they are taking initiative and assuming accountability. This lets them know what behaviours you expect and will reward in your business.

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat Look at yourself, care enough about your team to coach and mentor them and acknowledge when they are successful. Simple steps make all the difference.
